Markus Rogan (2008)

Markus Antonius Rogan ( born May 4, 1982 in Vienna) is the most successful Austrian swimmer of our time.

Career

In 1996, Markus Rogan in the U.S. and studied International Relations and Economics at Stanford University. After completing his studies at Stanford University Rogan trained with Robert Michlmayr, the Austrian coach of the year 2005. From 2004 to 2009 he lived in Vienna again. With the World Swimming Championships in 2001, he succeeded to win the second place 200m backstroke his first World Championship medal. On 8 December 2005 Rogan set a new world record in the 200 meters backstroke at the short track with 1:50,43 minutes.

In Athens 2004 Rogan took to Sydney in 2000, for the second time in the Olympic Games in part and took for Austria the first medal in swimming for the 4x100 -meter freestyle relay of the ladies in 1912. In a final, in which he after the first length nor was in last place, he could not fight his way to the silver medal.

About 200 meters backstroke Rogan was also second; it was the 100th medal for Austria at the Olympic Summer Games. After the race, the winner Aaron Peirsol was disqualified because of an alleged error leg after the third turn and declared the winner Rogan. But a protest of Americans were accepted, thus Peirsol was still the winner; a counter- protest of Austria and the UK was dismissed. Rogan later explained that Peirsol was the better swimmer, which alone deserved the gold medal. In September 2004 he was awarded for his exemplary behavior, the Special Fair Play Award of the European Fair Play Movement ( EFPM ), in October 2004, he was elected Athlete of the Year in Austria.

Since January 2007, he trained at the Italian coach Claudio Rossetto in Rome and starts continue for the SV Schwechat. In the Universiade in Bangkok, he won the 200 m backstroke gold and silver in the 100m back.

In addition to several silver and bronze medals at World and European Championships Rogan has been also eight times European champions. On 13 April 2008, he was at the Short Course World Championships in Manchester in the new world record time of 1:47,84 minutes champion over 200 meters backstroke and sent the defending champion Ryan Lochte by 0.07 seconds for second place. He also improved the previous world record of 1.21 seconds, and Lochte his personal best, which represented European record at the same time, by 2.02 seconds.

At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing Rogan placed ninth in the 4x200 m freestyle relay ( with Brandl, Koll and Janistyn ) in new Austrian record time ( 7:11,45 ). The collection in the 100m backstroke final, he missed by 4 /100 second and was also ninth overall. On August 15, Rogan was in the 200 meter backstroke by three lengths in third place, but was overtaken on the last 50 meters or by Arkadi Arkadyevitch Wjattschanin and struck a fourth in 1:55,49 minutes, which he his own Austrian record improved by 25/ 100 seconds.

In 2009 he improved three times the Austrian record at the Universiade, but reached as his best finish only fourth because he the swimsuit was torn in the final and he could no longer reach as the time from the semi-finals. With the World Swimming Championships in August 2009 in Rome, he went to over 100 m and 200 m backstroke, but did not reach the final. After the World Cup and his " spanking affair " in a nightclub, he moved to New York and trained from now with Dave Salo in Los Angeles, to prepare for the Short Course World Cup. He therefore also finished his graduate program early in his former main sponsor Raiffeisen.

At the first station of the World Cup in Durban, he improved as five Austrian records. At the World Cup meeting in Stockholm he won the 200m back and this improved his own European record. Just one week later in Berlin, the Russian Arkady Wjattschanin improved this record. At the World Cup meeting in Singapore, he achieved a new Austrian record, this time over 100 meters backstroke. The Short Course European Championships 2009, he won on 10th December 2009 200m individual medley with the new European record time of 1:51,72 minutes gold.

2010 Rogan won at the European Championship two silver medals. On 28 August 2010, he was honored as Sportsman of the year the city of Vienna. In the Short Course World Championships in Dubai, he won a silver medal in the 200m individual medley and a bronze in the 200m backstroke.

In December 2011, he struck at the European Short Course Championships in Szczecin 's 200m individual medley in 1:53,63 minutes in second and won a silver medal again.

In 2012 he took on the XXX. Summer Olympic Games in London in part for the fourth time in the Olympic Games. At the opening ceremony, he was standard bearer of the Austrian Olympic team at the entry of the athletes into the stadium. In the 4 x 200 m freestyle relay, he swam with 1:48,13 minutes though his personal best in Split, but the squadron occupied the 16th place overall. In the 200m individual medley competition he was in his semi-final through fourth order for the time being was ninth overall and would have reached the final after the withdrawal of Chad le Clos eighth. Due to a not allowed Dolphin leg shock during a tack he was disqualified. The protest of the Austrian delegation against this decision was rejected.

By far a total of 34 medals won at major events he is the most successful Austrian swimmer ever ( as at 23 May 2012).

Fictional character

In Space novel Everything works never (2005) by the Austrian author Martin Amanshauser, which is located in 2020, playing a character named Rogan one of the main roles, one in the book 38 - year-old former Olympic swimming champion who in the second Austrian astronaut by Franz Viehböck universe is flying.
