Marousi

Marousi (Greek Μαρούσι (n. sg. ), At the official level, even under the older name Amarousio [n ] Αμαρούσιο [ ν ] ) is a Greek city in the north of Attica and a suburb of Athens.

Location

Marousi is 12.5 kilometers north-west of the city center of Athens. It is bordered to the south by Chalandri and to the north by the noble Kifissia. The development of this Athenian suburbs goes over into each other.

History

Occupied the site of today's Marousi, in the past the demos Athmonon. In the fertile area of the vineyard flourished in antiquity. The current name refers to a sanctuary of Artemis Amarysia, who was worshiped in Amarynthos on Euboea.

As one of the largest in the suburbs of Athens and one of the first S- Bahn station, the city developed into a center mainly for administrative centers and pharmaceutical companies. The importance of Marousi for retailers, however, is steadily declining in favor of new shopping centers and large supermarkets.

Discussed in the literature is Maroussi by Henry Miller's Greece -Roman " The Colossus of Maroussi ".

Spyridon Louis, the first Olympic champion (1896 ) in the marathon, was born in Marousi. His bust stands in the main square of the city.
