Martin O'Malley

Martin Joseph O'Malley ( born January 18, 1963 in Washington, DC ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party since 2007 and Governor of the State of Maryland.

Biography

O'Malley, who comes from a Roman Catholic family, attended Gonzaga College High School, which he finished in 1981. After completing his law studies at the Law School of the University of Maryland in Baltimore, he settled as a lawyer. In 1990 he married Catherine Curran.

Since 1999 he was mayor of the city of Baltimore. 2002 dubbed him the Exquire Magazine as "The Best Young Mayor in the Country" and 2005 labeled him Time magazine as America's "Top 5 Big City Mayors ".

On 8 November 2006 he won the gubernatorial elections in the state of Maryland against the previous Republican incumbent Robert L. Ehrlich. O'Malley scored 52.7 percent of the vote, Ehrlich came to 46.2 percent. In the gubernatorial election of 2010 there was again a duel between O'Malley and Ehrlich. Contrary to the national trend, the significant gains for the Republicans brought in the elections this year, O'Malley was even able to increase its share to 56.2 percent and compete with it in January 2011, a second four-year term of office.
