Maurice, Duke of Saxe-Zeitz

Moritz of Saxe- Zeitz (* March 28, 1619 in Dresden, † December 4, 1681 in Zeitz ) was one of the Albertine line of the House of Wettin entstamme Direction Duke of Saxe- Zeitz Sekundogeniturfürstentums.

Life

He was the son of the Elector of Saxony Johann Georg I and his wife Magdalene Sibylle, daughter of Duke Albrecht Friedrich of Prussia. The Dukes August of Saxe- Weissenfels, Christian von Sachsen- Merseburg and the Elector Johann Georg II of Saxony were his brothers.

Together with his brothers Maurice was educated at the court in Dresden. Among his tutors marshal Kurt von Einsiedel took a prominent role. From August 1642 to September 1645 took Moritz together with his brother Christian a grand tour of Northern Germany and the Netherlands.

1645 Duke Moritz was taken by Prince Ludwig I of Anhalt- Köthen in the Fruitbearing society. The prince gave him the company name of the Modest and the motto in conduct. As an emblem him the root Julapium ( Ipomea L. ) has been covered. In the society of Köthen book, Duke Moritz ' finds entry under number 450, where also the rhyme Act is recorded, which he wrote during his recording:

In 1647 he was entrusted with the Bailiwick of Thuringia of the Teutonic Order. With the political scientists and theologians Veit Ludwig von Seckendorf Moritz had a significant chancellor and Konsistorialpräsidenten at his side. As court preacher of the dramatist Johann Sebastian seemed midnight at his court.

With the testamentary disposition of the Elector Johann Georg I of Saxony, the division of the Albertine Territory was completed on July 20, 1652 in Dresden.

Thus, the rule Zeitz came as Wettin Sekundogenitur to Moritz. This Duke Moritz became the first Duke of Saxe- Zeitz. In order to represent as such, Moritz was built from 1657 in Zeitz on the site of the Thirty Years War largely destroyed Bischofsburg a baroque castle building, castle Moritzburg. The castle was completed in 1678.

At the age of 62 years, Duke Moritz of Saxony- Zeitz died on December 4, 1681 at Schloss Moritzburg in Zeitz. His eldest son, Maurice William followed him under guardianship as Duke of Saxe- Zeitz on the throne.

Marriage and issue

He completed his first marriage on 19 November 1650 in Dresden with Sophia Hedwig of Schleswig -Holstein -Sonderburg- Glücksburg, daughter of Philip, Duke of Schleswig -Holstein -Sonderburg- Glücksburg from his marriage to Sophie Hedwig of Saxe- Lauenburg. Sophie Hedwig's sister Christiana married in a double wedding at the same time Maurice's brother Christian.

From the connection between Moritz and Sophie Hedwig following children were born:

Four years after the death of his first wife he closed on July 3, 1656 in Weimar, his second marriage to Dorothea Maria of Saxe- Weimar, the daughter of Duke Wilhelm of Saxe- Weimar from his marriage with Eleonore Dorothea of Anhalt- Dessau.

From the union between Dorothea Maria Hedwig Moritz and the following children were born:
