Messier 110

Messier 110 (also known as NGC 205) is an elliptical galaxy with dimensions of 18.6 ' x 11.8 ' and the apparent magnitude of 7.9 mag in the constellation Andromeda. She is a companion of Messier 31, the Andromeda Galaxy, and thus how these 2.2 million light years away. Messier 110 is now classified as a spherical dwarf galaxy. Their mass is estimated to be 3.6 to 15 billion announced solar masses. She has a halo of eight globular clusters.

In addition to Messier 32 Messier 110 is the second brighter satellite galaxy of the Andromeda nebula, and thus a member of the Local Group.

Discovery

Messier 110 was discovered on August 10, 1773 by Charles Messier, described in a 1798 publication and 1807 recorded pictorially on a drawing of the "Great Andromeda Nebula ". For unknown reasons, however, he has never included this object in his catalog. The "official" inclusion in the Messier catalog in 1966 by the science historian K. Glyn Jones.

Caroline Herschel discovered 110 Messier independently by Charles Messier on August 27, 1783 - by William Herschel, he was then the number H 5.18.
