Meyssac

Meyssac ( Occitan Maissac ) is a commune with 1264 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the Limousin region in the Correze on the western edge of the Massif Central. It is the capital of the canton of the same name. The municipality is a member of the Association of Communes Villages du Midi Corrézien. The inhabitants Meyssacois or Meyssacoises call themselves.

Geography

Tulle, prefecture of the department is located, about 40 kilometers north-east of Brive -la -Gaillarde approximately 21 kilometers north-west and about 100 kilometers south of Cahors.

Neighboring communities

Neighboring municipalities are Lagleygeolle in the north, Saint -Basile -de- Meyssac in the east, Saint- Julien- Maumont the southeast, Chauffour -sur- Vell in the south and Collonges- la- Rouge in the West.

Traffic

The junction 52 to the A20 Motorway, approximately 18 kilometers north-west.

History

The beginnings of the church go back to Gallo- Roman original owners. Later Meyssac was a fortified place and belonged until 1738 to the Vice- county Turenne. Ditches and ramparts with three gates protected the city. Each of the three gates pointed in one direction: to Beaulieu, Martel and Tulle. In the 18th century the fortifications were more and more superfluous, and the walls were torn down. The thereby resulting free space has been around for a ring boulevard around the place.

Economy

The municipality and the entire region are dominated by agriculture especially. On an average farm size between 10 and 35 ha mainly Limousin cattle are bred.

As in Collonges- la- Rouge historical buildings characterize red sandstone the village.

  • The Marktkhalle Halle aux Grains of red sandstone is classified as a monument historique since May 28, 1962.
  • The townhouse Verdier, a secular building from the 16th century, is classified as a monument historique since 22 August 1949.
