Monreal, Navarre

Monreal, basque Elo, is a place on the Camino de Santiago in the Spanish-speaking part of the Autonomous Community of Navarre in Spain. It is situated 18 km south west of Pamplona.

Despite its small size it was in the Middle Ages a private Jewish quarter. At times, the village was so significant that it issued its own coin. There was a castle that served as a hunting residence of the kings of Navarre. However, these exist only remnants. Their Destruction ( 1521) how the other Navarrese defenses was placed in the 16th century by the Spanish kings.

Be seen today is the church of St. Martin, which, of Gothic origin, was greatly changed in the 18th century. The altarpiece dates from the 17th century and was restored in 1927.

The image of the church is to be found partly as a station in the Game of the Goose, a popular board game in Spain with the most pilgrims main stations of the Way of St. James, as they can be found in the Liber Sancti Jacobi.

Monreal has a hostel for pilgrims.
