Mons-en-Barœul

Mons -en- Barœul (literally: mountain on Barœul ) is a commune with 21 361 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Nord, in the Nord -Pas -de -Calais. The municipality is located in the canton of Lille- Nord-Est.

Geography

The village is located approximately 3.5 km east-northeast of Lille in the lowlands of French Flanders in the middle of large urban conurbation of Lille, Roubaix and Tourcoing. Part of the municipality is forested from Forêt du Barœul.

History

The small community experienced its boom as suburbs of Lille. Between 1878 and 1880, the Fort de Mons was built to provide protection fro the city of Lille against a possible invasion from the east. Today, there is a station of the tram from Lille. As a modern building in the radio tower of Mons towering over the city area.
