Formation

By 2006, the state of Montenegro, was part of the Federation of Serbia and Montenegro and thus was also the Serb- Montenegrin national football team, which disbanded after the 2006 World Cup. The Serbian selection took the place of the Serbian - Montenegrin selection, as Serbia is considered as a political successor state of Serbia-Montenegro. The Montenegrin Football Association had to reincorporate itself.

Because at the time the draw for the qualification for Euro 2008, the Serb- Montenegrin team was listed, entered the Serbian selection in the first drawing group.

History

Montenegro was admitted as a provisional and on 26 January 2007 as a full UEFA member on 5 October 2006 and played the first international match on March 24, 2007 against Hungary at the Pod Goricom in Podgorica. Montenegro won the game by two converted penalty kick by Mirko Vucinic and Igor Burzanović 2-1. However, this game is not recognized by FIFA as Montenegro was not a member.

On 31 May 2007, Montenegro became FIFA member. The defeat against Japan ( 0-2) on 1 June 2007 at the Kirin Cup is considered by FIFA as the first official international match.

Montenegro participated at qualifying for the 2010 World Cup for the first time in an official competition and met in Group 8 Italy, Bulgaria, Ireland, Cyprus and Georgia. The team managed a win against Georgia, they played six times and finished in a draw in the final table fifth.

In qualifying for the 2012 European Football Championship the team played against Switzerland, England, Bulgaria and Wales. On the first day of the qualification you won with a 1-0 win against the Welsh, whereby the second place was achieved. Also in the course of the qualification you could keep the second place. This also get both a 1-0 victory over Switzerland and a 0-0 draw against England. At times, you even fought to win the group. This plan was rejected by a 1-2 defeat against Wales. Now the focus was on the second place - in a distance duel with the Swiss. Gameday On the penultimate qualifying could be located in the remote duel against Switzerland prevail. In the return match, against England, you could win a 2-2. After already lagged midway through the first half with 0:2, Elsad Zverotic marked shortly before the break the 1:2.

In injury time Andrija Delibasic marked it 2-2. Previously, the Swiss documents at the Welsh 0-2. The 2-2 draw of Montenegrins was also synonymous with safe participation in the play-offs. Opponents in the play- offs was the Czech Republic. The first leg on 11 November in Prague went 2-0 lost, as was the return leg 1-0. So you missed the qualification for the European Championship.
