Monterey Pop Festival
The Monterey International Pop Music Festival festival was planned by John Phillips ( The Mamas and the Papas ), music producer Lou Adler and the publicist Derek Taylor. The organizing committee also the Beatles and the Beach Boys were sitting. It was held from 16 June to 18 June 1967, the Monterey County Fairground in California.
Description
The Monterey Pop Festival is considered to be a musical prelude to the so-called " hippie culture " ( Flower Power, Love and Peace Generation ). A total of 50000-90000 people attended the festival. Bring out a documentary about the events, was the concern of Hollywood from the beginning. In 1968 came D. A. Pennebaker's Monterey Pop strip out as " non-commercial " film of the organization The Foundation.
There were many of the best known performers of popular music, including Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, The Who, Janis Joplin, Steve Miller, Electric Flag, The Butterfield Blues Band, Canned Heat, Eric Burdon and the Animals, Jefferson Airplane and The Byrds. Ravi Shankar played with his ensemble classical Indian raga music on the sitar.
The concerts were later partly as live recordings on LPs published (eg Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding and Ravi Shankar ). Artistic Director of the festival was Tom Wilkes.
That pop musicians to inspire more started for the synthesizer, goes back in part to the festival; Robert Moog there had a demo stand, which attracted much attention.
Cancellations for the festival
- Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, who was involved in the concept for the concert, The Beach Boys withdrew almost at the last minute. The group was supposed to end the festival as the main attraction.
- The Beatles accepted the invitation to play live, and not were then released from the organizing committee.
- The Rolling Stones did not occur. Guitarist Brian Jones, however, said on stage at the concert of Jimi Hendrix.
- Dionne Warwick said from the appearance on the grounds that it had already other obligations.
- Neil Young did not attend the festival, so he had to be replaced as a guitarist and singer in the band Buffalo Springfield by David Crosby.
- The Kinks had confirmed their participation, received from the United States, however, no visa, as they were with the American musicians' union in the dispute.
- Donovan received a visa to the United States, as he had in 1966 in violation of the narcotics law.
- Cream said, since their band manager had planned for the U.S. debut of the band other performances.

Effects
The performance at the Monterey Pop Festival was the breakthrough for Otis Redding for some musicians outside the soul scene, Jimi Hendrix and The Who, who were already successful in England, now in the U.S., and for Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company it was the breakthrough at all.
The festival itself was the first in the series of large ( Rock ) festivals.
Eric Burdon & the New Animals published later the song Monterey on the album The Twain Shall Meet. In the text, Eric Burdon mentioned some of the participating musicians and imitates the particular musical style short.
