Montijo [ mõtiʒu ] is a municipality and town in the district of Setúbal and Lisbon region of Portugal. Until 1930 it was known as Aldeia Galega Ribatejo. The history of Montijo and the surrounding villages is closely connected to the Tagus. The river formed for centuries the livelihood of the people. Main source of income were and are deep-sea fishing, salt production and viticulture. Montijo was not until 1985 that the town charter.

General

Montijo is divided into eight districts. It is one of the few municipalities in Portugal, which are territorially disjointed; the others are Oliveira de Frades, Soure and Vila Real de Santo Antonio). The main section, in which lies the city itself, is the smallest part and is bordered to the northeast of Alcochete, Palmela in the southwest and the southeast, by Moita. The secondary eastern part is about 20 km, is bounded by Coruche in the northeast, Montemor -o -Novo in the east, Vendas Novas in the southwest and of Palmela and Benavente in the southwest.

The new bridge over the Tagus river, the Vasco da Gama Bridge, was built in March 1998 for Expo 98 in Lisbon with the link of Sacavém - Dedicated to Montijo. With a catamaran Transtejo Montijo is connected in around 20 minutes with the Cais do Sodré, Lisbon.

Montijo is called the land of bullfights, good food (especially fish ) and the Fado known.

Demographics

The development of the population has risen by leaps and bounds due to the shorter travel time over the Vasco da Gama Bridge in Lisbon in recent years. Here now live about 51,000 people.

Economy and Transport

Montijo is today by its strategic location an important transport hub and headquarters of many companies in Portugal. Montijo also has a nationally significant commercial center with 10,000 square meters of retail space just off the A12 motorway, Forum Montijo. The A12 connects Lisbon and Setúbal runs through Montijo.

To the west of the town is a military airfield. In a few years the new international airport of Lisbon is built on the territory of the municipality.

The high-speed line Madrid - Lisbon will connect the new airport with the Greater Lisbon and the rest of Portugal. Work on the two major projects are currently ( spring 2011), has been provisionally postponed due to the financial situation precarious in Portugal.

The railway line Ramal do Montijo was decommissioned in 1987.
