The State Highway 4 (SH 4) is a New Zealand State Highway. With 237 km in length, it is the shortest of the eight former national State Highways. It runs in a north -south direction through the hills in the interior and forms a shortcut between two points on the State Highway 3, Taranaki and the coasts of North and South Taranaki Bight bypasses.

The SH 4 is both in cities and in rural areas, for the most part a road with one lane in each direction with intersections and property accesses, ie equivalent to about a federal highway / main road.

Route

The road branches off in Eight Mile Junction eleven kilometers south of Te Kuiti on State Highway 3. The road runs in südsüdöstliche direction increases first and then rises through the winding valleys of the Ohura and Ongarue Rivers, two tributaries of the Whanganui River, again. The Ongarue opens near Taumarunui in the Whanganui, from there the road turns briefly to the east and follows the valley of the Whanganui upriver. Now the highway turns south and touches the edge of Mount Ruapehu, the volcanic peaks of SH 4 out is clearly visible, especially the southernmost summit.

In Horopito the road swings to the southwest shortly to follow a tributary of the River Maungawhero to its mouth near Raetihi. The highway also follows the valley of the Maungawhero up to 40 km from its mouth. From there it runs westward through the hills to the valley of the Whanganui River, which up to Wanganui it follows the last 15 km.
