Novy Urengoy

Novy Urengoy (Russian: Новый Уренгой ) is a city in Russia with 104 107 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ). It is located in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District in the northern West Siberia at the Pur - inflow Jewo - Jacha, about 450 km east of the district capital Salechard. The nearest town is Tarko-Sale, located 139 km south of Novy Urengoy.

History

With the first hole near the present city of Novy Urengoy the development of the Urengoy gas field was started in 1966, which led to the settlement of labor in this hitherto largely uninhabited area. Economy and Transport

As the center of one of the most important natural gas production regions of Russia Novy Urengoy is now unofficially as the capital of the Russian gas production. The three largest companies are based in Novy Urengoy to the company Gazprom owned gas companies Urengoigasprom, Jamburggasdobytscha and Tjumenburgas that together provide almost 75 % of Russian gas production.
