Background information

Songs

The whole album is dominated religious with titles like " Gethsemane ". "The Pharaoh Sails to Orion" begins with the verse Exodus 10:28:

" Get away from me! Take heed to thyself and see my face no more! For in the day Thou see my face Thou shalt that. "

" Get off of me, and beware that do not you come in front of my eyes; for in the day that you come in front of my eyes, thou shalt die. "

On "Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean" and "The Pharaoh Sails to Orion" acts as a guest vocalist Tapio Wilska, who was in the meantime singer of Finntroll.

" Passion and the Opera" is musically remarkable, as there is a coloratura is used in the song, which is musically where from Mozart's opera The Magic Flute similar.

" Moondance " was up to the album Dark Passion Play from 2007, the only instrumental piece which has to date ever managed on a Nightwish album. Guitarist Emppu Vuorinen was against it, record the song, but finally sat Tuomas Holopainen his will.

" Walking in the Air " is a cover version by Howard Blake.

" Sleeping Sun " is dedicated in Central Europe of the solar eclipse of 11 August 1999. Composer Tuomas Holopainen had been commissioned to write a not too long, catchy ballad about the event. The song and the accompanying music video helped that Nightwish gained great popularity in Germany in particular.

"Night Quest " is about the band itself: In the verses all the band members are described (except Sami Vänskä, since this was not in the band when the song was written ).

Cover

The original cover of the version published by Spinefarm is kept quite dark and shows a need in the water woman in a wedding dress that is illuminated by the moon. In addition, an owl can be seen holding a parchment in her claws. The design refers to the song " Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean". But it is not quite clear whether this should act as a title track. Subtracting added (see below), the Drakkar cover seems to be a reference to " Gethsemane " may even obvious.

On all versions, which were released by Drakkar Entertainment, this cover image was replaced by a new one which, although showing the same motives, but rather is drawn in bright colors.
