Once [ wʌns ] is the fifth studio album by the symphonic power metal band Nightwish. It was released on 7 June 2004 and is the last of the Tarja Turunen participated as a singer. It is also the most commercially successful to date, but also the second most expensive album of the band: the production cost € 400,000, of which € 100,000 the commitment of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. With this album, Nightwish also changed her music label Drakkar Entertainment to Nuclear Blast.

Background

The cover

The cover of the album shows a hunched over a provided with the decisions taken in laurels carved inscription "Once" stone pedestal angels. The subject is enclosed by a straightforward way of ornate circle. The cover was designed and drawn by Markus Mayer. The motif exists as a real grave stone at the Protestant Cemetery in Rome, but with a different logo in the header. Is rather unknown, that the Greek Gothic metal band Odes Of Ecstasy same illustration, but without inscription, on their album Embossed Dream In Four Acts used by 1998. In addition, there is a picture of this sculpture, the Angel of Grief by William Wetmore Story, also on the first EP by Evanescence, Evanescence EP ( 1998).

Music style

Nightwish have their music for this album added many new elements, but without losing the old style too: for example, Creek Mary 's Blood contains many Indian elements and ends with the spoken text and Native American artist John Two-Hawks. The ten- minute piece Ghost Love Score is supported in large part by the orchestra. Overall, are reinforced to hear orchestral sounds compared to " Century Child " and it has been increasingly used as striking and subtle choirs ( Dark Chest of Wonders, Planet Hell, Ghost Love Score ). Wish I Had An Angel remembers with a hard riff on the music of Rammstein. The voice of singer Tarja Turunen is a total of five tracks ( Wish I Had An Angel, Planet Hell, The Siren, Romanticide, Higher Than Hope), the bassist Marco Hietala of the page.

Reception

Reviews

Critics accused the band, to have very aligned with this album to commercialism. So Nightwish came with Nemo on the Top of the Pops show on RTL and in the chart show on ProSieben and played there Playback, which is very unusual for a metal band. Even changing the German label Drakkar to Nuclear Blast was used as an argument for the increasing commercialization: The band now had one hand even great success outside the metal scene, on the other hand Nuclear Blast is known because of its policy in the scene, " to operate Sale " so, for example, four different versions of the single Nemo came into the trade.

Tour

The tour to the album ( "Once World Tour" ) led Nightwish after the opening concert on May 22, 2004 in Kitee, Finland throughout Europe, parts of South America and the United States, Canada and Australia. After one and a half years, the tour ended on 21 October 2005 at the Hartwall Areena in Helsinki. Versions

Also of Nuclear Blast is a DVD-Audio version of Once with high-resolution and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound appeared. In the published in Argentina and Japan editions of the album the song White Night Fantasy is included as a bonus on the Japanese additionally the title Live To Tell The Tale.

Nemo

Nemo (Latin for " nobody " ), the first single from Once, was published in May 2004 in two versions with different cover art and track listing as well as an audio DVD. In the first version, published on 3 May 2004, is located next to the title track in duplicate (once normal, once in orchestral version ) nor Planet Hell of Once and White Night Fantasy an unreleased bonus track. The second version ( Release Date: May 17, 2004) provides Nemo also twice, but additionally contains the music video for the song and has been with Live To Tell The Tale providing also an unreleased B-side. On the DVD audio version can be found next to the title song still 5.1 mixes of Planet Hell and Nemo. The single reached platinum in Finland, Gold in Norway and was No. 1 on the Hungarian, Finnish and Brazilian singles chart. In Germany, the single reached great fame because she in the trailers for the fifth season of the hit series Charmed - Magical Witches was used.

Wish I Had An Angel

On 27 September 2004 appeared Wish I Had An Angel the second single from Once. From the title track you can hear besides the default still a demo version, or other B-side's Ghost Love Score (Instrumental Score) and a cover version of the Swedish singer Ankie excavators called Where Were You Last Night.

Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan

This third single was only released by Spinefarm and is therefore finland - exclusive. She appeared on 24 November 2004 and contained the main piece still Creek Mary 's Blood (Instrumental Score) and Symphony Of Destruction ( Live, cover of Megadeth ).

The Siren

On 25 July 2005 with The Siren the fourth single released from Once, released in two versions ( one by Nuclear Blast, the other by Spinefarm ). The title track is represented in three versions: a single edit, the album and a live version, recorded in Chur ( Switzerland ) on 27 February 2005 In addition, the single live versions of Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan (contains recorded at the concert in.
