Ocolis (deprecated Ocolişul Mare; Hungarian Alsóaklos or Nagyaklos ) is a town in Alba county in Transylvania, Romania.

Geographical location

The community Ocolis located in the north of the circle to the left of the aries Alba - a right tributary of the Mureş ( Maros ) - in the Apuseni Mountains, between the mountains part Trascău and Muntele Mare. One kilometer from the National Highway (Drum National) DN 75 is removed, the site of the city of Turda is located about 30 kilometers south west ( Cluj County ); the county capital Alba Iulia ( Charles Castle ) is 45 kilometers (direct distance ) south of Ocolis away. Ocolis is part of the historic Pimp country.

History

According to reports from R. Münsterberg and J. Ohler, 1902 and G. Téglás, archaeological remains were brought to the territory of the commune ( in eingemeindeten village Vidolm ) in conjunction with the Roman period.

The place Ocolis, a former Romanian Nationals village, which belonged to the municipality Rimetea (Iron Castle ) - was first mentioned in records in 1408 under the Hungarian name Aklos.

The inhabitants live today mainly of animal husbandry, forestry and the mining of dacite.

The leading through the village of narrow gauge railway Turda Abrud ( 93 km ) was opened in 1912 and decommissioned in 1998. The train station and a train bridge on the site of the community are protected monument since 2006.

Population

1850 lived on the territory of the present municipality of 1,770 inhabitants; 1,764 of these were Romanians and six Roma. 1941, with 1883 having the largest population, also registered at the same time the Romanians ( 1870 ). The highest number of Hungarians (22 ) was determined in 1920, Roma 1850. At the 1890 census in eingemeindetem village Vidolm (Hungarian Vidaly ) was a German registered. The population ( 1,412 in 1977 ) took over the past few decades clearly; 2002 there were still 846 people in the community.

Attractions

  • Old farms, with straw or shingle-roofed wooden houses.
  • The wooden church Botezul Domnului in eingemeindeten village Lunca Larga (Hungarian Lunkalárga ), built in the 18th century, is a historical monument.
  • The wooden church Sf. Arhangheli in eingemeindeten village Runc (Hungarian Aranyosronk ), built in 1733 and renovated in 1852 is also a listed monument.
  • The Naturrezervate Cheile Runcului and Cheile Pociovaliştei, in the northwest of the municipality.
