Oliena

Oliena ( Sardinian Uliana ) is a municipality with 7306 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the eastern central Sardinia.

Geographical Location

The town is located 379 m to the north-eastern slope of the predominantly composed of white limestone Supra Monte Mountains, whose highest peak ( Mount Corrasi with 1463 m slm ) is the local mountain Olienas.

Borders the following municipalities: Dorgali, Nuoro and Orgosolo.

History

The viticulture in the region was founded by Franciscans and Jesuits.

Music

As in many Sardinian villages are also sung in Oliena on many occasions Canti Sardi - traditional Sardinian choral singing, in which 4 Tenores a cappella produce a poignant sound. These dances are partly traditional round dances, but these can also be accompanied by accordion music.

Structures

There are about 10 churches, all of which are architecturally quite simple. The Parish Church of St. Ignatius of 1734 is, however, like most Jesuit churches of Sardinia built with three side chapels without profiled transept. Inside there is a wooden statue of the founder of the Jesuit Order of St. Ignatius of Loyola, who holds the book of the " Constitutions Societatis Jesu" in her hands. He is dedicated to the church. In the sacristy of the " Retablo di San Cristoforo " depends, has the influences of the Quattrocento painting of Umbria and an example of the popular flow among the Catalan Retabelmalern of the late 15th century.
