Pikalyovo, Leningrad Oblast

Pikaljowo (Russian Пикалёво ) is a city in the northwestern Russian Leningrad Oblast. She has ( as of October 14, 2010 ) 21,562 inhabitants.

Geography

The city is located about 240 km east of the Oblasthauptstadt Saint Petersburg at the headwaters of the river Rjadan in the river system of the Neva River at the edge of the Tikhvin ridge.

Pikaljowo belongs to Rajon Boksitogorsk.

History

An on site of the present town village was first mentioned in documents in 1620.

1906 here the station Pikaljowo was opened at the newly built railway line St. Petersburg - Vologda, named after the founder of the neighboring farm Pikaljow.

1932 was built nearby in connection with the construction of a cement factory, a housing estate of the same name, which was awarded in 1947 the status of an urban-type settlement and 1954, the city law.
