Ponor (Alba)

Ponor (Hungarian Nagyponor ) is a town in Alba county in Transylvania, Romania.

Geographical location

Ponor is located on the county road (Drum Judetean ) DJ 750C and the eponymous creek Ponor - a tributary of Aries - in western Transylvania. In mountainous terrain on the border between Trascău Mountains and Transylvanian Erzgebirge (Romanian Munţii Metaliferi ) in the historic Pimp country, the place some 27 kilometers (air distance) is east of Câmpeni ( Topesdorf ); the county capital Alba Iulia ( Charles Castle ) is located about 32 km (air line) southeast.

History

The place Ponor was first mentioned in a document according to several sources in 1603 or 1648. He has since been characterized by grazing.

Population

The 697 residents of the municipality designated in 2002, with the exception of two Hungarians throughout as Romanians. The population has remained stable since the first official survey in 1850 (then 2065) to the mid-1950s roughly constant since then and took significantly. The same applies to the actual place Ponor; Here, the population fell from 405 in 1956 to 149 in 2002.

Traffic

From Ponor a road leads to the equally dirt road Aiud - Abrud. Approx. 10 km to the north is connected to the running in the valley of Aries National Road ( Drum National) DN 75 Public transport not touch the place.

Attractions

The place Ponor itself has no special features. In the vicinity of the town there are still several thatched houses today - are, however, no longer used for residential purposes - with a few exceptions.

Of tourist interest is the scenic location. On the southern edge of the municipality is the gorge Cheile Geogelului is.

  • The Naturrezervat Vânătările Ponorului (1.5 hectares). A few kilometers north-east of Ponor there opens the current flowing through the village stream in the karst cave Peştera Dâlbina.
  • The wooden church ( Sfânţii Arhangeli ), in eingemeindeten village Geogel (Hungarian Kisgyógypatak ), built in 1751, rebuilt in 1823 and renovated in 1848, is a listed building.
  • The Monastery of Ponor ( Înălţarea Domnului and Sfântul Ierarh Nectarie ) outside the village ( about 1300 m).

Personality

  • Victor Ciorbea (born 1954 ), born in Ponor, was Prime Minister of Romania von 1996 to 1998.
