Port Charlotte is a census -designated place (CDP ) in Charlotte County in the U.S. state of Florida with 54 392 inhabitants ( 2010).

Geography

Port Charlotte is located on the north bank of the Peace River and 5 km northwest of Punta Gorda. The CDP is crossed by the Tamiami Trail ( U.S. 41 ) and affected by the Florida State Road 776. In the east, Interstate 75 leads to Port Charlotte over. Tampa is located about 140 km north of the town.

Religions

In Port Charlotte, there are 70 different churches from 30 different denominations. Among the belonging to a denomination churches the Baptist church is strongest with 13 churches. Furthermore, there are 6 to no denomination belonging churches ( as of 2004).

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 54 392 inhabitants distributed in 29 408 households. The population density was 941 inh. / Km ². 84.8 % of the population were white, 9.3% African American, 0.3% Native American and 1.6% Asian Americans. 1.8% were members of other ethnic groups and 2.3% in different ethnic groups. 8.7% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 44.2 % of all households lived in 22.3 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 63.8 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.27 persons and the average family size is 2.76 people.

19.6% of the population were younger than 20 years, 17.6 % were 20-39 years old, 28.1% were 40-59 years old and 34.9 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 50 years. 47.9 % of the population were male and 52.1% female.

The average annual income was $ 40,614, while 14.0 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 90.77 % of the population spoke Spanish 4.41% and 4.82% had a different mother tongue.
