Before the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the 1880s, the path between the lake and river formed the part of a travel and trade route between Ontario and Quebec in the east and Alberta and British Columbia to the west and so offered an alternative to the route through Grand Rapids. Since the new railway line ran via Portage, was the importance of the location obtained while Grand Rapids lost heavily. Today Portage is mainly agricultural and subsequent processing food industry. The largest oat mill in the world is in Portage.
