Rachuonyo District

Rachuonyo District is a district in the Nyanza Province in Kenya. The district capital is Oyugis. The Rachuonyo District is divided into four divisions: Kasipul, Kabondo, East and West Karachounyo Karachounyo. To the north and west of the district bordering Lake Victoria. 77 % of people in the district live below the poverty line.

Economy

70 % of the population work in agriculture. There are mainly cultivated maize, millet, tobacco, coffee beans, tea and cotton.

Education

Rachuonyo District decreed 2005 on 339 primary schools and 58 secondary schools. 15 % of boys and 20 % of girls do not finish primary school, in secondary schools, the school dropout rate is 20%.

Health service

The district in 2005 had 36 health care facilities, including four hospitals. One doctor for 150,000 potential patients. The most common malaria and pneumonia are treated. The HIV prevalence rate was 30 % in 2001. The infant mortality rate in 2001 was 8.7%, 10.2 % of children died before their 5th birthday. The average life expectancy is 47 years. In Oyugis the Roman Catholic Church operates a home and a Vocational Training Centre for blind and deaf people in Kendu Bay, a children's home.
