Randy Gilhen

Randy Alan Gilhen ( born June 13, 1963 in Zweibrücken, Germany ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player who, in his playing days from 1979 to 1998 among others for the Hartford Whalers, Winnipeg Jets, Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers played in the National Hockey League.

Career

Randy Gilhen was born in Germany but grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on. His career as a hockey player, he started in the Canadian Juniorernliga Western Hockey League in which he was active for the Saskatoon Blades and Winnipeg Warriors from 1979 to 1983. During this period, he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1982 in the sixth round as the 109th overall player of the Hartford Whalers, for which he came towards the end of the 1982/83 season in two games in the National Hockey League action. The following two years in the Hartford Whalers franchise but he spent at their farm teams Binghamton Whalers of the American Hockey League and Salt Lake Golden Eagles of the International Hockey League. On 8 November 1985, the winger signed a contract as a free agent with the Winnipeg Jets, however, came in his first three years in the franchise almost exclusively for their farm team Fort Wayne Komets of the IHL and the Sherbrooke Canadiens and Moncton Hawks of the AHL for use. Only in the 1988/89 season, the Canadians prevailed at the Winnipeg Jets in the NHL.

In June 1989 Gilhen was transferred along with Jim Kyte and Andrew McBain in exchange for Randy Cunneyworth, Rick and Dave Tabaracci McLlwain to the Pittsburgh Penguins, with whom he won the prestigious Stanley Cup in the 1990/91 season. The following three years of his career were marked by numerous changes within the NHL. He first played briefly for the Los Angeles Kings, then seasonally across a year for the New York Rangers, and later for the Tampa Bay Lightning, his former team, the Winnipeg Jets and Florida Panthers. From 1994 to 1996 played Gilhen a third time for the Winnipeg Jets in the NHL. When the franchise was relocated, he entered yet another two years at its proximate team Manitoba Moose in the IHL before he ended his career at the age of 35 years.
