Rhaetian Railway Ge 6/6 II

The Ge 6/ 6 II is a heavy electric locomotive of the Rhaetian Railway (RhB). The six-axis machines (drive configuration Bo'Bo'Bo ') are mostly used in freight service.

History

Prehistory

In the 1950s, the traffic on the RhB grew so strong that the existing " crocodiles " Ge 6 /6 I and Ge 4 /4 I no longer sufficient. Begun in 1958, the electricity works in Bergell under the builder of the electricity plant in the city of Zurich needed per day to 1,000 tons of cement, which had to be transported from Untervaz Engadin. For this, needed the RhB a locomotive that could pull a trailer load of 250 tons on the 35 parts per thousand ramps of the Albula line.

Commissioning

The two locomotives of the first production series ( numbers 701 and 702) were delivered in 1958 by SLM, BBC and MFO at a price of 230,000 francs, the successor ( numbers 703-707, put into service in 1965 ) were then 200,000 francs more expensive.

Construction

Technically, the machines correspond to the level then: (Low Voltage ) position switch and single-phase series motors. The outer two bogies and traction motors can be exchanged with the Ge 4 /4 I. The box joint between the two Lokhälften allowed only vertical movements. The Ge 6/ 6 II 80 km / h and 65 tons in weight, they provide 1776 kW at 46 km / h The permissible trailer weight is 205 tonnes to 45 per mil pitch and 280 t to 35 per thousand.

Conversions

The first two locomotives had yet transitional doors on the front sides. These were in 1968/69 welded shut, the matching of the second series (with two instead of three front windows ), however, was only towards the end of the 1980s. 1985 began the repainted from green to red, and in 1998 the old pantographs were replaced by modern pantograph.

The Ge 6/ 6 II today

After completion of the valley's power plants the 700 were mainly used express trains on the Albula line. Since the total from 1993 put into service have 4 /4 III undertaking this work, the Ge are found 6/6 II mainly freight trains on the entire trunk network ( without Arosa line), but also in front of passenger trains they are still to be seen.

701 locomotive is named after the Roman province of Raetia, which has been preserved until today as a synonym for Graubünden, locomotive 702 the Latin name of Curia of the cantonal capital Chur. The remaining vehicles are 703-707 for larger Graubünden municipalities, which are the route endpoints on the trunk network, named. Next to the name is available on each locomotive in addition the company number in white and the crest of the Godfather community ( in the Lok 701 Canton Arms).

On 22 November 2011, the locomotive 703 was heavily damaged in Rueun station in a train accident in the front. She had hit her head on a freight train waiting at the station train ( wagons with Rangiertraktor ).
