Geography

Location and description

The expansion of an area of 9282 km ² comprising the department is located in the west of the country. On the west boundary of the Uruguay River which forms the border with Argentina is flowing. The capital city of Fray Bentos is a center of meat processing. It lies on the Uruguay River opposite the Argentine Gualeguaychú and has 23 122 inhabitants ( 2004 census ). The bridge Puente Internacional Libertador General San Martín near the town is part of the shortest overland connection between Buenos Aires and Montevideo. The second largest city is the major transportation hub, Young, 90 km northeast of Fray Bentos located, with 15,759 inhabitants ( 2004).

On the Departamentogebiet gypsum deposits are present in Bellaco.

History

The Department was formed in 1868 from the old Department of Paysandú. One of the pioneers in this area was the French Basque José Hargain, who settled with his wife and young daughters. Fray Bentos, capital of the province, was established in 1853 under the name of Villa Independencia. The present name of the town refers to an alleged monk ( fraile → fray ), who lived in the Barranca de Caracoles (snails gorge ) before Villa Independencia was founded.

Education

Economy

In Fray Bentos is one of the most important ports of the Uruguay River, the area in the middle of the 19th century evolved greatly through the.
