Russian Professional Football League

The 2nd Division until 1997: 2nd league, is the third Russian professional football league, and is organized by the Russian Football League. The league is geographically divided roughly into five zones: the west ( north-western part of European Russia ), center (northern / eastern part of European Russia ), south (southern part of European Russia ), Ural - Povolzhye (southern Urals and western Siberia) and East (the rest of Siberia ).

Depending on the year will change the number of teams in the 2nd Division, also varies the number of teams even during the current season so far always as always clubs have been excluded from the game. So began the 2009 season with 81 participants, of which but a total of six during the season for violations of the rules of the league - were excluded - not started to away games, no salary payments or referee bribery. The group winners automatically advance to the 1st Division, while the last group relegated to the amateur league and lose their professional status. 1994-1997 there was then under the second league briefly another semi-professional playing level, the 3rd league.

The classification of the groups are roughly oriented to the geographic conditions, boundary clubs can be classified into different scales depending on the participants of the different seasons, the clubs from Moscow and surrounding areas are distributed over the seasons West and center.
