Ruth Aarons

Ruth Hughes Aarons ( born June 11, 1918 in Stamford, Connecticut, † June 6, 1980 in Los Angeles, California ) was the first and only U.S. table tennis world champion.

Family

Aaron was the daughter of Alfred E. Aarons, the owner and operator of the Avon Theatre in Chicago, and the opera singer Leila Hughes Aaron. She had a brother named Lisle and a half-brother Alex A. Aarons.

Career

At 15, she started to American tournaments to play. It had its most successful period 1934 to 1937, when she won all the tournaments in which they participated. In those four years, it secured at the U.S. Championships each title in singles and mixed doubles, the latter with four different mixed- partners ( Sam Silberman, Sidney Heitner, Victor Barna and Robert Blattner ).
