Salles-d'Aude

Salles d'Aude, is a commune with 2983 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) in the Aude department in the Languedoc- Roussillon region. It belongs to the district of Narbonne and the Canton Coursan.

Geography

The community Salles d'Aude, situated about ten kilometers northeast of Narbonne and ten kilometers from the Mediterranean coast.

The municipality extends on both sides of the Aude River and is bordered to the north by the department of Herault. In the south, the municipality has a small proportion of the heights of the Massif de la Clape (also Montagne de la Clappe called ).

In the vast plains left and right of the diked Aude wine is cultivated, whose documents are part of the small wine region Clape, located immediately northeast of the Corbières wine region.

The settlement of the nuclear village is separated by the highway 9 ( Rhône Valley - Spanish border ) from the south-east directly adjacent Fleury. The commune includes the hamlets Celeyran and Le Pech.

History

The place was first mentioned in 966 as Salae. About Castrum de Salis ( 1322) and Salas and Sallas and Salha in the 15th and 16th centuries, changed the spelling of the place name to Salles ( since 1781 ).

Demographics

The sea and location close to the short distance to the city of Narbonne favored a steady population growth. By moving to new home communities around the old village the population since the 1970s grew by almost double.

Attractions

  • The Château de Céleyran, as a historical monument ( Monument historique ) classified, belonged to the parents of the French painter Henri de Toulouse- Lautrec, who spent part of his childhood and used the property later for recreational visits.
