St. Margen is a municipality in the district of Breisgau in the Black Forest, Baden -Wuerttemberg ( Germany ). In the climatic spa and pilgrimage, which is located in the Black Forest, is home to around 1,800 inhabitants.

Geography

Geographical location

St. Margen is located in the southern Black Forest is approximately 18 km (air line) east of Freiburg im Breisgau. The extensive area extends largely on a plateau from Thurnerpass in the south to the eastern foothills of the candelabra in the north and lies 570-1132 m above sea level. NN. History

Its history is closely connected with the history of the monastery of St. Margen. Between 1115 and 1118 the Augustinian Canons Maria- cell was constructed on the Black Forest as a rival to the nearby Zähringen monastery of St. Peter in the Black Forest of Count Bruno of Haigerloch - Wiesneck, Chancellor of Henry V, and Strasbourg Cathedral Provost. In the 1460s the monks moved to the monastery of Saints of the Augustinian Canons in Freiburg im Breisgau due to ongoing difficulties. After his resignation, the monastery was revived and built a two-towered Baroque church monastery and new monastery buildings from 1716. 1806 was finally resolved in the course of secularization.

Theater

Personalities

  • Matthias Faller (1707-1791), Barock-/Rokoko-Bildhauer, lived mainly in St. Margen and also created here his major works
