St. Martin in Innkreis ( also Sankt Martin im Innkreis ) is a market town in Upper Austria in the district of Ried in the Innviertel with 1792 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013).

Geography

The parish of St. Martin in Innkreis is on the 370 m above sea level. A. in Innviertel on the western slope of the Troßkolmwaldes in Antiesental, about 10 km north of the district capital Ried at the house jerk highway ( B143 ).

The expansion is 3.4 kilometers from north to south, from west to east 6 km. The total area is 8.9 km ². 13.5% of the area is forested, 69.7 % of the area is used for agriculture.

The town of Sankt Martin im Innkreis consists of the two components of this world ( the nominal capital ) and beyond. The place names are to be taken literally, which are two parts - seen from the castle - on both sides of the Antiesen.

Today, the site is overgrown with Breitenaich in the north and in the south Hofing ( Ortbestandteile also community Aurolzmuenster ) already at a village road along the former state highway. Breitenaich begins on Senftenbach the castle pond, Hofing about the power plant, height Station.

The capital comprises nearly 400 buildings with about 1,300 inhabitants, which is about 2/3 of the community.

History

1084 was the first written mention of St. Martin as a fief of the Prince-Bishopric of Passau. Around 1150, it is called Ainwicus de sancti Martino, Village of St. Martin '. The Lords of Schwent appear in 1166 as vassals of St. Martin on.

After the Peace of Teschen in 1779 the place came with the Innviertel (then Innbaiern ) to Austria. During the Napoleonic Wars Bavarian short, it belongs since 1814 finally returned to Austria above the Enns. 1821 were the Imperial Count von Arco - Valley as a successor of the extinct Imperial Count of Tattenbach owner of the resulting rule in the Middle Ages St. Martin.

The town was a municipality in 1850.

After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on 13 March 1938, the village belonged to the Upper Danube. Between February and May 1945, the municipality of refuge for the world-famous Lipizzaner stallions of the Spanish Riding School was. On 7 May 1945, the stallions of Colonel Alois Podhajsky were presented in a presentation to the American General George S. Patton in St. Martin, to ask for its protection. After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria.

In 1991, the municipality had 1595 inhabitants according to the census, in 2001 then 1695 inhabitants.

Religion

1084 St. Martin's Church was first mentioned, but they probably existed earlier. 1491 occurs the first mention of a priest in St. Martin. 1781 was the Baroque style of the Catholic church and the increase of the tower. On July 17, 1963, came the collapse of the church tower, 1964/1965 for the reconstruction of the church tower and the extension of the nave.
