Schleuis

Schleuis ( [ ʃlu̯ɛɪ̯n ]? / I, and German until 1983 officially Schleuis ) is a municipality in the district of Ilanz in the district Surselva the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland.

Key and sword are the attributes of Saints Peter and Paul. The coat of arms of the lords of Lion Mountain, where the barony Schleuis was afforded the coat of arms colors.

Geography

The Romansh -speaking in the idiom Sursilvan village is 4 km east of Ilanz in the Anterior Rhine Valley a few kilometers from the famous tourist resort of Flims- Laax- Falera as well as the entrance to the Rhine Gorge ( Ruinaulta ).

History

For the first time the village in 1298 was mentioned as Sluwen. From the Middle Ages until 1803 Schleuis was under the rule of the von Lowenberg. The village church of St. Peter and Paul is first mentioned in 1321. West of the village stood on a hill the mountain lion, of which, however, only a few remnants are present.

Mills

Above the village was the Mulin Sura (upper mill). The small mill, which was used for pounding barley and millet, still stands; the large grain mill, however, has disappeared. From the channel lines to faint traces have been preserved. The Mulin sut (lower mill) was below the road. With an additional water wheel was powered a saw since the 19th century, which was dismantled in 1950. Even during the Second World War were the mills of Schleuis under the Plan Wahlens in active use. After 1945, traditional mills of modern Neumühlestrasse of Ilanz had to give way.
