Scott M. Matheson

Scott Milne Matheson ( born January 8, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois; † 7 October 1990) was an American politician (Democratic Party), who was from 1977 to 1985 Governor of the State of Utah.

Early years

His family moved to Parowan, Utah, when he was five years old. Later they moved to Salt Lake City, where his father became Deputy U.S. Attorney of Utah. Matheson graduated in 1946 at the Salt Lake City 's East High School. Then he made in 1950 with a degree in political science at the University of Utah in 1952 and his law degree from Stanford Law School. After he was admitted to the bar, he practiced for several years in Cedar City, Utah. The mid-1950s he moved to Salt Lake City, where he was Deputy Salt Lake County Attorney. Then he worked from 1958 to 1976 in the legal department of the Union Pacific Railroad Company. In between, however, he was from 1969 to 1971 for three years as deputy general counsel for the Anaconda Copper Company.

Governor of Utah

Matheson in 1976 was elected governor of Utah, and re-elected once. He held this office from January 3, 1977 until January 7, 1985. Matheson enjoyed the functioning of government, had a penchant for details and forms of government relations, was a skillful administrator and was often referred to as a " technician governor ". As Governor, he went to some important points. Through the external forces, whether it acted to federal authorities, national energy companies or powerful regional communities of interest that were obviously increased and more important, he tried more than his predecessor before to get some control over Utah's affairs. He also advocated an alliance between the government and the business community to promote growth and in particular the development of Utah's natural resources. Therefore, he worked closely with major corporations and the Western Regional Council, consisting of senior executives of the largest companies within the West and himself designated as a regional equivalent to the National Business Roundtable. Matheson refused the development of the MX missile system in Utah, where he was initially for it. He was also against the transport of moist nerve gas from Colorado to Utah Tooele Army Depot. In addition, it supports the Central Utah Project and solved the " Project Bold" from what foresaw a plan for land swap between the federal and the state government. As Governor, he had presided over the National Governors Association, worked in the federal Intergovernmental Task Force on Water Policy and presided at the Four Corners Regional Commission and the Western Governors ' Policy Office. In the end he decided against a third term.

After the end of his term he returned to his lawyer in Salt Lake City. Matheson died of complications from cancer at the age of sixty-one years.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter -day Saints. He and his wife Norma Louise Warenski he had four children together. Scott Matheson Jr. is a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth District Court, Jim Matheson since 2001 Member of the House of Representatives of the United States.
