Skadovsk

Skadovsk (Ukrainian Скадовськ; Russian Скадовск ) is a port city and a tourist center in the south of the southern Ukrainian Kherson Oblast 100 km south from Oblastzentrum Kherson. The city lies on the shores of the Black Sea at the Dscharylhatsch bay opposite the island Dscharylhatsch. It is the administrative seat of the homonymous Rajons. The city administration under standing next to the town with 18,500 inhabitants Skadovsk (2013 ) and the village Oserne (Ukrainian Озерне ) with about 100 inhabitants.

History

The territory of the present-day city was inhabited in the Bronze Age, remains still visible today relics of Kurgankultur. In addition, during archaeological excavations traces of settlement were discovered by Scythians and Sarmatians. In the Middle Ages the area was a long time under the rule of belonging to the Ottoman Empire Krimkhanats. During this time there was near the present city of a Tartar fishing village by the name of Ali Agok ( Ukrainian, Russian: Алі - Агок ).

1894 saw the founding of the modern village, which was named after the German -born noble Sergiy Baltasarowitsch Skadowskiy who owned this area. First, the place was called Skadowskiy, 1895 the city received its current name. The most important development factor was was shipped at the time of the harbor, from where grain, wool and lamb in particular to Western Europe. 1899 lived in the city already about 2,000 inhabitants. Even then also the spa tourism had some meaning. In the first half of the 20th century, the population suffered heavy losses during the Russian Civil War and the Second World War. In the Soviet times, the spa facilities were further expanded.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms was designed in 1994. It refers to the symbols of anchors, ear of corn, irrigation canal and parasol on the central business areas of the city: the harbor, the agriculture and health tourism.

Economy and Transport

Economically, especially the harbor and the food industry is important. From the harbor there are, inter alia, regular ferry services to Batumi (Georgia ), Thessaloniki (Greece) and Samsun (Turkey). The nearest railway station is located in the Kalantschak, 52 km away.
