Sony Music Entertainment
, Often called Sony Music Entertainment Sony Music only briefly, is one of the world's three largest major label next to Universal and Warner Music Group. The company has a global market share of about 25 percent and is a 100 percent subsidiary of Japan's Sony Corporation.
The Headquarters is located in the Sony Building in New York City. By 2006, Andrew Lack was Chairman of the Board. The operational management (CEO) had by 2006 also Andrew Lack hold. He was succeeded by Rolf Schmidt -Holtz. Sony Music Entertainment is a global company with several offices throughout North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Oceania. The German branch of Sony Music Entertainment Germany GmbH has its headquarters in Munich, the Sony Music Entertainment Austria GmbH in Vienna and the establishment of Sony Music Entertainment Switzerland GmbH in Zurich.
From company Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) is to be distinguished, that is not a subsidiary of the U.S. company, but also one directly to Sony.

Sony BMG
Sony BMG Music Entertainment was founded in 2004 as a joint venture between Bertelsmann Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment. Previously, the Bertelsmann subsidiary and the Sony group company had one of the five largest music companies in the world and held a market share of about 15 per cent.
The collaboration was approved without conditions in October 2007 by the European Commission after a detailed examination of competition law again. Earlier, the European Court of First Instance decided in July 2006 that the European Commission, the previous positive decision was not sufficiently substantiated to the cooperation between the two record producers.
On 5 August 2008, Bertelsmann and Sony announced the dissolution of the joint venture by Sony BMG. Bertelsmann takes over the master rights of some " selected European music catalogs " from Sony BMG and performs the BMG brand as " licensing and management platform for the perception and marketing of music rights " on.
The acquisition by Sony has been criticized by the industry association Impala that the world's largest consumer electronics company now controlling also the second largest music company.
In July 2009, the music company moved its classic division, Sony Classical from New York to Berlin.
In July 2009, Sony Music Entertainment strategically involved with 49 % of the European classical music business of DEAG German Entertainment AG.
Sony Music Entertainment has invested in the insolvent since October 2009, SPV GmbH and took over their distribution. The cooperation includes the option of a later full takeover. With this cooperation, Sony Music Entertainment invested in a large catalog in the field of heavy metal and rock. Previously, Sony had already concluded distribution agreements with Metal Blade Records and Drakkar Entertainment, working in the same segment.

The German subsidiary Ocean Artist and Brand is responsible for the marketing of the artist. The parent company Sony Corporation covers more segments from the music business. The formerly independent music publishing company ATV Music Publishing LLC was initially part of a joint venture with Sony Corporation. The Sony DADC pressing plants offer since 1987 reproduction services for optical media.
