Place-name forms

The place name is first mentioned Wehlen 1255 as part of the personal name Theodoric de Wilin. He goes * Vel -n- back to the altsorbische basic form, which can be explained in several ways. A first possible variant is the derivation of * Vel ( a), the first name of a locator, which the place name "settlement of a Vel ( a) " would mean. Version two is that the place name * vel, a altsorbische equivalent of the Slovenian velna (, clearing '), underlies and he could be thus translated as " Rodungsort ". The third variant is the place name to * vel (, wet, damp ' ) so it would correspond in German a "settlement on damp ground." The special feature of the naming is that the word city explicitly part of the name of city Wehlen. The additive is used to distinguish the neighboring hamlet village Wehlen. Wehlen would therefore not a correct name for the place Wehlen in Saxon Switzerland.
