The Stanford Stadium is a stadium on the campus of Stanford University in California. It was opened in 1921 and serves primarily as a venue for the football games of the Stanford Cardinal, who play in the Pacific -12 Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

History

The stadium was built built in 1921 in a race against the University of California, Berkeley in just four months and was opened on 19 November 1921. The first game was also against Berkeley, who defeated Stanford with 42:7. The horseshoe-shaped stadium had an initial capacity of 60,000 spectators and was after the Yale Bowl is the second largest stadium this time. 1925 have been added and thus the shape of a horseshoe almost closed another 10,200 seats. Finally, the number of seats a further 14 to a total of 80 series was expanded in 1927 and reached its maximum capacity of 85,500. 1935 Stanford a record crowd of 94,000 was in the derby against Berkeley, won with 13-0, situated.

On 22 October 1989, the San Francisco 49ers played a home game at Stanford Stadium since the Candlestick Park during the Loma Prieta earthquake suffered damage.

1994 were held here six matches of the Football World Cup. Brazil was able to achieve three victories on the way to the world title in Stanford Stadium.

In 2005, the stadium was renovated after the season. The renovated stadium was opened on 16 September 2006, a game against the Navy that was lost 37:9.
