Steve Staios

Steve Staios ( born July 28, 1973 in Hamilton, Ontario ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey defender of Macedonian descent, who during his active career, among other things, for the Boston Bruins, Vancouver Canucks, Atlanta Thrashers, Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames and New York Islanders National Hockey League has played.

Career

Staios was in the NHL Entry Draft in the second round, selected in 1991 by the St. Louis Blues as a total of 27 players. In the following years Staios had a relatively successful career in the Ontario Hockey League where he played for the Niagara Falls Thunder and the Sudbury Wolves. Then it moved Staios 1993 in the International Hockey League, as from 1995 in the American Hockey League. In 1995, Steve Staios finally made ​​his NHL debut with the Boston Bruins. After three years at the Vancouver Canucks Staios was chosen by the newly formed Atlanta Thrashers in the NHL Expansion Draft in 1999, which meant that he played mostly as a right winger. With his new team, he was appointed captain. After two years in Atlanta, the Canadians joined the Edmonton Oilers. As the NHL season 2004/ 05 fell victim to a strike, Staios temporarily changed to the Swedish first division club Luleå HF.

Staios was part of the squad the Oilers, when they lost the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals against the Carolina Hurricanes in the seventh game. With a goal and five assists Staios was involved in the playoffs on his team's success. On 3 March 2010 it transferred the Oilers in exchange for Aaron Johnson and a third-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft in 2011 to the Calgary Flames. After the expiration of his contract at the end of the season 2010/11 the defender was initially without a club before he was Islanders invited in September 2011 to the training camp of the New York, where Staios short time later received a contract for the season 2011/12. In July 2012, he declared his active career to be over, and was subsequently presented at the Toronto Maple Leafs in the role of Player Development Advisor.

Internationally

For the Canadian National Team Staios took part in the World Championships in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2008. In the tournaments in 2003 and 2004 he won the gold medal with Team Canada.
