History

The Strato AG 1- CEO Norbert Stangl in 1997 it was converted from a former of the Escom Executive Marc Alexander Ullrich and the former 1 & founded out consultancy. As part of the campaign www.wunschname.de 1998 standardized web hosting packages have been sold with its own domain in May. In the same year sold the two founders Strato at the Berlin company TELES.

First Strato pursued an outsourcing concept. Strato itself was limited to marketing, for the technique ( KPNQwest Germany GmbH later) was only the venturer Xlink responsible. Due to the favorable offer price for webspace and a growing number of customers to 1999/2000 resulted in the situation that large parts of the German Internet are hosted on a single server, thus a congested Sun Enterprise 6500 with mass storage devices from EMC. After repeated, sensational server failures, this design proved to be untenable. 2002 Strato could become independent of technology partners through the acquisition of the Karlsruhe Rechenzentrum of the insolvent KPNQwest. First of all the technology was driven by the specially created sister company Strato Rechenzentrum AG, which also yielded benefits for third-party companies to a limited extent, since the Strato Rechenzentrum AG was merged with the Strato AG.

TELES sold on 12 December 2004 Stratocaster to the freenet AG for a purchase price of 132 million euro. On 19 November 2009, freenet announced the acquisition of Strato by the German Telekom. The purchase price amounted, according to the press release of freenet to 275 million euros. On 18 December 2009 the Federal Cartel Office cleared the acquisition by the German Telekom.
