The Notwist

The Notwist is a German indie band, which originates from Weilheim in Oberbayern. It is the reason for the foundation of many Weilheim bands and center of a network of more or less closely related projects of local musicians.

The members of The Notwist are often also represented in other projects or publish solo, among other things, at / with Tied & Tickled Trio, Lali Puna, Ms. John Soda, Potawatomi, Ogonek, 13 & God, Football Heroes, welders. Many of these bands were present at the music label now defunct house music, which is often mentioned in connection with the band, even though they had only a few compilations ( including a co-production with Calexico ) released on this label.

As pointed out at the beginning of times, as The Notwist acted as a nationally known school band, the group takes today in Uphon studio on in Wilzhofen in Weilheim.

Band History

After the band's formation in 1989, the self-titled debut album was released in 1990. Musical saw It contained a mixture of punk, rock and metal. In the same year it went on tour with Jesus Lizard and Bad Religion. Was released in 1992 on the label Big Store the follow-up album Nook, which got by Carsten la Tenderness by music magazine Visions the review rating 6 out of 5 (sic! ). After a tour with Therapy? and Blum field and the production of various soundtracks, as well as the release of a live album by Tobby Holzinger on Your Choice Records (1994 ), 1995 came out the album 12 on which is now also the first electronic instruments and computer sound snippets were used, which of Martin Gretsch man, aka Console ( formerly Toxic ) were created. In 1997, Martin Gretsch man was officially incorporated as a permanent member in Notwist. In 1998, he again on Big Store the release of the album Shrink, which has been very far from the original style of the band and now primarily contained jazz and electronic elements. Nevertheless, the panel had a high recognition value, the band had kept striking elements of their music in spite of style change. The ensuing tour led Notwist, among others, Stereolab in England and with the Japanese music artist Cornelius one more time in the United States.

After the production of soundtracks for Gigantics and Crazy was founded in 2002 for the first time in his own country and licensed the album Neon Golden was published by Big Store on the Berlin label City Slang. Four years, the band had retracted to produce their new studio album. Stronger than on the previous albums came on Neon Golden mainly by Martin Gretsch man forced to wear electronic elements, which generated its own sound cosmos along with the guitar -oriented sound of the band and symphonic accompaniment. It gave the band the biggest success so far. It debuted at number 10 on the German album charts and was awarded the Annual Prize of the German Record Critics' Award 2002 The Documentary On / Off The Record by Jörg Adolph about the making of Neon Golden was broadcast in 2002 on 3sat and at the 3 November 2006. released on DVD.

In summer 2003 the band started her own music label called Alien Transistor on which they released the EP lights, which is a soundtrack to the movie of the same name by Hans-Christian Schmid. On 6 September 2004, the EP solo swim, a common plant of Notwist, Console and Klimek appeared. At the same time it is the soundtrack to the documentary channel swimmers by Jörg Adolph. These two EPs have been released in vinyl form and as MP3 download - like the last EP by Rayon ( Markus Acher ), which was published in spring 2006. Published in 2008, The Channel Swimmer DVD is solo swim in a CD.

In March 2005, the album 13 & God, for which the band has formed, together with the record label Anticon Themselves to the group 13 & God appeared.

In early 2006 the band went into the studio to The Devil, You Me, record the follow up album to Neon Golden. It was released on 2 May 2008. During the recordings founding member and drummer Martin Schmid diameter of the band is folded. For the recordings Andi Haberl jumped, who accompanied the band on the subsequent tour.

Was published in 2009 storm as the soundtrack to the film by Hans -Christian Schmid. For the soundtrack, the band won the German Film Award.

The soundtrack for the feature film What remains of Hans -Christian Schmid was also supplied by the band.

On 21 February 2014, a further studio album titled Close to the Glass was published, which appeared, among others, on the label City Slang and Sub Pop.
