Ugolnye Kopi

Ugolnyje Kopi (Russian Угольные Копи ) is an urban-type settlement in the Autonomous District of the Chukchi in the extreme northeast of Russia. She has (October 14, 2010 Balance ) 3368 inhabitants.

Geography

The settlement is located about eight kilometers due east of the administrative center of the Autonomous Okrug Anadyr. From the city Ugolnyje Kopi is separated by the there three to five kilometer wide estuary of the river Anadyr, not far from its left ( northern ) bank it is located.

Ugolnyje Kopi is the administrative center of the Rajons Anadyr.

History

The settlement arose in connection with the exploitation of lignite deposits for the fuel supply in the region and the construction of an airport. First, the seven kilometers north-west, located directly on the coast settlement Schachtjorski was (literally " miner's settlement " ), in 1960 the status of an urban-type settlement received, but is now left. There was also the first built in the 1930s airfield of Anadyr.

1968 was also Ugolnyje Kopi (literally " coal mines " ), whither had now shifted the center of coal mining, urban-type settlement, mainly as a miner housing development. East of the town, a new, larger airport was developed from the 1950s, moreover, the strategic bomber aviation forces of the Soviet air forces served mainly, but also the civil air traffic to Anadyr and Chukotka served in a separate area.

In 1997 the administration of the Rajons Anadyr was moved from Anadyr to Ugolnyje Kopi while Anadyr administrative center of the Autonomous Okrug remained. After the unification of Rajons Anadyr to the south then Rajon Beringowski to a new Rajon Zentralny ( " Central Raion " ) on 30 May 2008 Ugolnyje Kopi remained its center. Since 18 November 2008, the new Rajon again bears the name of Anadyr.

Economy and infrastructure

The main industry is still in decline exploiting dividend coal production. In addition Ugolnyje Kopi plays a role as an administrative and because of the near airport as a transport and supply center.

The three-kilometer east of the settlement airport Anadyr Ugolny ( ICAO code UHMA ) is the main access point and air traffic center of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug. He is serviced on regular services to Moscow, Magadan, Khabarovsk and Vladivostok, has connections to all local airports of Autonomous Okrug and charter air service to the United States ( Nome, Anchorage ). Militarily, the airport is no longer used regularly since the early 1990s. To the settlement and the airport there is a local road network; the connection to the city Anadyr is maintained in the summer a ferry, in winter a ice road.
