Uhlwiller

Uhlwiller ( German Uhlweiler ) is a commune with 702 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Bas- Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs to the community association Région de Haguenau. The inhabitants are called Uhlwillerois.

Geography

Uhlwiller between Dauendorf in the northwest and in the southeast Ohlungen, eight kilometers north-west of Haguenau. Located in the southwest of the hamlet of Lower Altdorf belongs to Uhlwiller.

History

From the 14th century it belonged to the monastery Neubourg. As a result of a dispute with the monastery brought residents of the village in 1333 by the Abbot Berthold and had to pay for it later, different amounts of ransom.

Culture and sights

The Musée du pain ( Bread Museum ) in Uhlwiller shows the evolution of grain processing of seed to baking the bread in the changing times.

A first chapel Saint -Nicolas in the hamlet of Lower Altdorf was built in 1393. To 1617 the present chapel was built. A Gothic arch of the previous building has been preserved in a side wall.

A church Saint- Pierre was first mentioned in 766 in a document. The church at that time was given by the Saints- Pierre -et -Paul Monastery in Wissembourg in order. The nave was rebuilt in 1740, the medieval tower remained. 1822 the church was enlarged in 1876 and 1877 destroyed rebuilt in neo-Gothic style.
