Una-Sana Canton

The Canton Una -Sana ( bosn. Unsko - Sanski Canton, Croat. Unsko - sanska županija ) is one of the ten cantons in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He is in the northwest of the country and has its administrative headquarters in Bihać.

The Canton Una -Sana is 4125 km ².

Geography

The canton is bordered to the north by the Croatian Sisak - Moslavina, in the east and southeast to the Republika Srpska, in the south to the Canton 10, and to the west by the counties of Zadar and Lika -Senj. Historically, it comprises the western part of the so-called Bosanska Krajina ( Bosnian frontier ). On the important strategic position of the area remember numerous castle ruins.

The two largest rivers Una and Sana are what give the Canton of its name. Among the smaller bodies of water include the Sanica in the east, as well as the Glina, which marks the border with Croatia in the north.

The Canton Una -Sana is divided into four topographically. The Northwest is dominated by the forested uplands of Banija that rise to the Croatian border in Bužim up to 630 m. In the east and south, the gorge-like valley of mostly Una joins. In its most extensive level of the capital of the canton, Bihać is located. Again southeast is the rough and sparsely populated Grmec Mountains, whose highest point is 1604 m Crni Vrh of ( "Black Peak "). The easternmost part of the Canton area is the Valley of Sana with the cities of Sanski Most and Ključ.

To the west of Bihać - at the Croatian border - one part of the Plješevica Mountains to Una -Sana Canton. Meanwhile, 1,649 meters high summit is also the highest point in Canton. South of Bihać a narrow, about 30 km long strip of territory with the places Kulen Vakuf and Martin Brod belongs to the canton.

Population

The Canton Una -Sana had about 299,000 inhabitants in 2013, with the Bosniaks 94 % of the population ..

Una -Sana is one of the five Bosniak majority cantons in the Federation. The Serbian part of the population lives mainly in the municipality of Bosanski Petrovac.

Traffic

The main roads are the Magistralstraßen 4-2, 5, 14 and 15 M4 -2 begins on Bosnian territory at the border crossing Maljevac and via Velika Kladuša and Cazin, before it joins at Ostrožac in the M14 coming from the east. It represents the busiest connection between Croatia and Bihać

The M5 starts at the border crossing Izacic and runs through Bihać and Bosanski Petrovac after Ključ. From there, it extends further towards Jajce and Sarajevo. So you connect the western to the eastern part of the canton. The M14 runs through the gorge and connects Una Bosanska Krupa with Bihać, while the M15 runs through the Sana valley and connects with Ključ Sanski Most.

Coming from Knin - - With the Una -Bahn railway line runs in the valley of the Una and has stations among others in Martin Brod, Kulen Vakuf, Bihać, Bosanska Krupa Bosanska and Otoka. However, it is operated only intermittently and only on the section from Bihać towards Novi Grad of passenger trains since the Bosnian War.
