United States Women's Open Championship (golf)

The United States Women's Open Championship ( also: U.S. Women's Open Golf Championship ) will be held as one of thirteen national championships of the United States Golf Association ( USGA) since 1946.

Importance for the ladies tours

The U.S. Women's Open Golf Championship, along with the LPGA Championship, the Women's British Open and the Kraft Nabisco Championship is one of the four LPGA major championships. From the LPGA was founded in 1950 it was recognized as the only major tournament. The other current major championships were added later.

In contrast to the counterpart in the men ( PGA Tour ), the United States Women's Open Championship is not recognized worldwide as a major tournament. The Ladies European Tour recognizes none of the three held in the U.S. major championships and the Japan LPGA Tour has their own majors. Nevertheless, the LPGA Tour in the women's golf a higher priority than the PGA Tour in the men's golf.

In 2007, the first non- American women were in the majority and 2008, the only 19 -year-old South Korean won Inbee Park and was the youngest ever winner of all time. The youngest participant who has qualified was in 2007 Alexis Thompson at the age of 12 years and four months.
