The University of Ottawa (English: University of Ottawa, French: Université d' Ottawa ) is an international university in Ottawa, Canada's capital. was founded in 1848 as the College of Bytown by the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate.

Rankings and teaching

The University of Ottawa is one of the oldest universities in Canada and the largest bilingual university in the world. It is one of the leading top institutions and is under international university ranking 2011/12 World's Best Universities in 13th place among the best universities in Canada. Most courses are considered to be research-intensive ( very- high level of research intensity ), as admission requirement in each case at least references, very good grades and aptitude tests are required.

In the approximately 30,000 students bilingualism is generally assumed, as all lectures will be held in two languages. Depending on the number of seminar applicants and the resulting distribution key, which can vary each semester, the student's individual events in English (68 %) or in French language (32%) are offered. Lessons and tests are completed over the study period in the two alternating languages.

Theoretically, some courses could be completed in only a preferred language, but this is avoided in practice because of the risk of a large loss of time, as a result of the distribution key can be explicitly requested by the student teaching language of the successful allotment at the time the next available course space ( in the other language ) contrary.
