Victorin Lurel

Victorin Lurel ( born August 20, 1951 in Vieux- Habitants, Guadeloupe ) is a French politician of the Parti Socialiste ( PS), since 2004 President of the Regional Council of Guadeloupe and since May 16, 2012 Minister for Overseas Territories in the cabinet of Prime Minister Jean- Marc Ayrault.

Life

Studies and local politicians

Lurel, son of a poor agricultural worker family with thirteen children studied, according to a commercial college ( bac d' économie ) in Guadeloupe economics at the University Panthéon- Assas and graduated with a Diplôme d' études approfondies (DEA ) from. He then completed a postgraduate course in political science at Sciences Po, the prestigious Institut d' études politiques de Paris. On his return he joined in 1981 the civil administration of Guadeloupe, where he was director of the Department of Agriculture.

He began his political career in local politics and was elected as representative of the Socialist Party as a member of the municipal council of his native city of Vieux- Habitants in March 1989 and belonged to this by March 2001. On 29 March 2004 Lurel was the successor of Lucette Michaux - Chevry President of the Regional Council of Guadeloupe. In the second round, the PS won 58.4 percent of the vote and was able to achieve 29 of the 41 seats in the Regional Council, while the UMP received only 41.6 percent and 12 seats. Victorin Lurel was appointed after the election of François Hollande as President and the appointment of Jean -Marc Ayrault as prime minister of this on 16 May 2012 Minister for Overseas Territories in the Cabinet.
