Villars-Mendraz

Villars- Mendraz was a municipality in the district of Gros- de -Vaud in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland. Villars- Mendraz merged on 1 July 2011, several other municipalities to the new community Jorat Menthue.

Geography

Villars- Mendraz is located on 774 m above sea level. Level, 15 km north-east of the canton capital Lausanne ( straight line ). The small scattered village extends along the southern edge of a broad plateau which connects north to the heights of the Jorat, in Molassehügelland of Vaud Mittelland.

The area of ​​1.6 km ² large former municipal area includes a portion of the high plateau between the Mentue and the middle Broyetal. The south-eastern boundary runs along the stream Ruisseau de Neyrevaux, which flows in a small Talniederung. The northern and eastern parts of municipalities lie on the plateau in the headwaters of the MERINE, a left Bach Broye. Population

With 193 inhabitants ( 31 December 2010) Villars- Mendraz was one of the small communities of the Canton of Vaud. Of the 94.7 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 3.2 % and 1.1 % portugiesischsprachig (as of 2000). The population of Villars- Mendraz amounted in 1900 to 137 inhabitants. Thereafter, until 1970, by strong emigration a decrease to 84 inhabitants recorded; Since then, the population grew significantly again.

Economy

Villars- Mendraz was until the mid 20th century a predominantly coined by farming village. Even today, the farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding have an important role in the economic structure of the population. History

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1235 under the name Vilar Mundri; 1450 appeared the name Villarmendra. The name evolved from the Latin words Munderici villa (House of mouth Eric ).

The municipal area had in the Middle Ages, the Benedictine priory Lutry and the Cistercian abbey skin - Cret land. Later, the village came to the Savoy castle Bailiwick Moudon. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536 came Villars- Mendraz under the administration of the bailiwick Moudon. After the collapse of the ancien régime, the village belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the District Moudon.
