Villers-Chief

Villers- Chief is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Villers- Chief is located at 650 meters above sea level, 15 km south-southeast of Baume- les -Dames and about 31 km east of the city of Besançon (air line). The village is located in the Jura, on the high plateau of Villers east of the basin of Orsans, near the source of the Creuse.

The area of ​​7.83 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The main part of the territory occupied by the plateau of Villers, which is on average 650 m. It falls in the west to the basin of Orsans, in the south to the Valley of the Creuse, and is mainly consisted of arable and meadow land. The plateau has no above-ground rivers, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground. To the southeast, the terrain rises to the Bois de la Cote gradually. With 773 m on the rocky ridge of Trois Croix reached the highest elevation of Villers- Chief. South of the village is located in an erosion valley the source of the Creuse ( source of the river Audeux ).

Neighboring communities of Villers- Chief are Vellerot -lès -Vercel and Villers -la -Combe in the north, Germéfontaine in the east, and Domprel Eysson in the south and Épenouse and Bremondans in the West.

History

In the Middle Ages belonged Villers- Chief to rule Vercel. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. Villers- Chief does not have its own church; the village is pfarrgenössig to Villers -la -Combe. Since 1998 Villers- Chief is a member of the 44- villages municipal association Communauté de communes du Pays de Pierre Fontaine - Vercel.

On 1 January 2009, the district membership of the community has changed. So far, belonging to the district Besançon, all municipalities in the canton came to the district Pontarlier.

Population

With 112 inhabitants (1 January 2011 ) is one of Villers- Chief of the smallest municipalities in the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1896 232 persons were still counted ), only small fluctuations were recorded since the early 1980s.

Economy and infrastructure

Villers- Chief was well into the 20th century, a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) embossed village. In addition, there are today some of the local small business enterprises, including a sawmill and a mill on the Creuse. Many workers are also commuters who engage in the surrounding larger towns of their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a secondary road that leads from Orsans by Pierre Fontaine- les- Varans. Further road links exist with Vercel - Villedieu -le-Camp, Landresse and Villers- la -Combe.
