Visp (French Visp, Valais German Fischp ) is a municipality and capital of the district in the Swiss canton of Valais.

The place is located at the entrance to the southern valleys of the Matter and Saas Valley.

History

From the time of turning a small, found on Visper territory Gallo- Roman statue "Le Dieu de Viège " is obtained. A copy is attached to the fountain at Station Square.

In 1276 the traffic over the passes Macugnaga and Antona was released from all customs duties. Visp was great beneficiaries, built Susten and became the market town.

Economy

Visp is the economic center of the German-speaking Upper Valais and together with Brig- Glis a metropolitan area. Visp is with the chemical industry (factory Lonza) and several smaller companies the center of the Upper Valais industry. Visp has also many commuters (about 1300) from the neighboring communities.

Traffic

The Visp railway station is a major hub of the Matterhorn- Gotthard -Bahn, which was created from the merger of Brig -Visp- Zermatt -Bahn and the Furka -Oberalp -Bahn in 2003. The timetable change in December 2007, the new Lötschberg base tunnel was opened. Visp has since been an important railway junction of the New Rail Link through the Alps (NEAT ) on the line Basel -Bern -Lötschberg- Simplon to Domodossola -Milan line Lausanne -Brig. The journey to Bern has thus been reduced to 55 minutes.

Visp is also known as the bottleneck from the Upper Valais. In road transport, at peak times, on both sides of the city to observe each extended jams. A solution of the problem was created back in the 70s, but always rejected because of political wrangling. Since 2001 is now working on the 8.8 km long four-lane southern bypass of Visp. The section of the national highway A9 can be expected to be taken in a two-lane tunnel with oncoming traffic into operation in 2016. The full expansion is expected to be completed in 2019. The projected cost will amount to about 1,775 billion francs.

Sports

Is known of the Hockey Club was founded in 1939 EHC Visp. This was in 1962 once the Swiss champions in the National League A in 1960 and 2011 Swiss Champion in the National League B. Since 1999, the club plays in the National League B, there is no money (budget approximately CHF 1.8 million ) and the old Litternahalle hall in which the EHC Visp plays, does not meet the demands of top Swiss League ( National League A). For Club include 14 teams: 3 Active, 1 ladies, 1 seniors, 9 offspring. It play 300 active male and female players (as of August 2011).

Sights and culture

Several Roman Catholic church buildings and chapels dot the village and countryside. Main church is St. Martin. Since 1951 Visp also has a Reformed Church.

Associations and religious communities

The city has to offer many sporting, musical, literary, religious and other cultural associations.

Between the Albanian cultural Visp and its mosque, which lies to the east of the city, and the forum migration Upper Valais a very good contact and exchange. The Albanian diaspora community in Visp comes mostly from the Macedonian city of Tetovo and its region. This Albanian- Muslim community has about 220 members and is dominated Sunni. With the help of some regional parishes, the municipality of Visp and donations from the émigré community, the mosque was built. In Visp and in the surrounding communities now live about 1000 Muslims.
