From " Concept 1 " to the " New Beetle "

The Concept 1

Began in 1992 at Volkswagen, founded in 1991 at the American Design Center in Simi Valley, California, working on a concept for a vehicle that was based on alternative drive systems. The goal was complete zero emissions. Through extensive market research in the U.S., it was found that among the population in North America, the beetle was most associated with the Volkswagen brand.

The designer Freeman Thomas and J Mays designed the design study "VW Concept 1 " as a modern interpretation of the VW Beetle. In 1994, the Concept 1 at the Detroit Auto Show was first presented to the public. The reaction of the public and press was surprisingly enthusiastic.

1995 was presented " VW Concept 1 " Convertible at the Geneva Motor Show what the public interest in the vehicle is still enlarged. The reactions to the new model were so positive that Volkswagen complied with its demands of the audience and the study evolved. In Geneva, Volkswagen spoke for the first time about a possible series production. Originally scheduled time was the floor pan of the future generation of Polo. Considered in 1995 as a drive other than a 1.9-liter turbo-diesel (66 kW ) with a 5 -speed manual gearbox Ecomatic a 1.4 - liter three-cylinder turbo-diesel (50 kW) with a 18 kW electric motor ( hybrid ) and a 37 kW electric induction motor from Siemens with a two- speed automatic transmission.

In 1995, a second revised prototype was presented and officially announced that the vehicle is to go into series production in Japan. Basis for the series variant should be the A4 platform of the Golf IV.

New Beetle

In March 1998, the New Beetle has been officially unveiled. This means that Volkswagen was one of the first manufacturers to put a vehicle in the so-called retro design on the market.

The design of the " New Beetle ", with the exposed fenders, the round shape of the bonnet and the indicated running boards, is an allusion to the VW Beetle. Also at the design of the interior reminds much like the handle above the glove compartment, the straps on the B- pillar, the circular instrument cluster, luggage nets on the doors and also the famous flower vase on the dashboard of the Beetle. The chassis of the New Beetle is based, like the Golf IV, Audi A3 and Škoda Octavia on the A4 platform. Due to the Group's platform, the realization of a rear engine had no chance. The only new parts that were installed at the existing A4 platform, were the cooler and fan, the three-spoke steering wheel and a modified fuel filler neck. Further, the vehicle springs, and the exhaust system had to be adapted. Compared to the Concept 1, the New Beetle has pronounced bumpers, the turn signal emigrated from the headlights in the bumper, the breakthrough for the tailpipe of the exhaust system in the rear apron accounted for, the round mirrors have been replaced with elongated horns and the grid accounted for.

The Volkswagen New Beetle was produced in Puebla, Mexico. In the spring of 2003, the New Beetle Cabriolet ( plant ID: Type 1Y ) was presented. The convertible also shows many parallels with the VW Beetle Cabriolet, for example, the open resting on the body top, which is protected with a tarpaulin from contamination.

The small side indicators the door lock previously were under the facelift migrated into the exterior mirror housings, modified the VW emblems of blue and white chrome gray chrome, replaced the rotatable rear emblem against a static, as well as on the passenger side was removed and the locking / unlocking now generally equipped with radio central locking.
