W. E. Moerner

William Esco Moerner ( usually known as WE Moerner; * June 24, 1953 in Pleasanton, California, USA) is an American physicist and chemist.

Moerner grew up in Texas, which explains its common name referred to by the initials, as he himself says.

Moerner received his B. S. in Physics, B. S. in Electrical Engineering and his A. B. in mathematics at Washington University in 1975. was followed by the MS and Ph.D. in physics from Cornell University in 1978 and 1982. 1981-1995 he conducted research at IBM. Subsequently, he was until 1998 a professor at the University of California, San Diego.

Moerner since 1998 and since 2002 Professor Harry S. Mosher Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University with an honorary appointment in Applied Physics. His research focuses on single-molecule spectroscopy, physical chemistry, chemical physics, biophysics and nano- photonics.

He received the 1984 Roger I. Wilkinson National Outstanding Young Electrical Engineer Award and the 2001 Earle K. Plyler Prize of the American Physical Society. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, Optical Society of America, American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and since 2007 a ​​member of the National Academy of Sciences. In addition, he won the 2008 Wolf Prize in Chemistry, 2009 Irving Langmuir Award in 2013 and the Peter Debye Award.
